Runoff Quantity and Quality from Amended Urban Residential Lawns
نویسندگان
چکیده
New residential landscapes in Florida are often installed on sandy fill soil that has been compacted (bulk densities >1.60 g/cm3) during the home construction process. The goal of this study was to determine whether incorporating compost into new lawns could reduce stormwater runoff volumes and nutrient loadings. Before landscape installation, one three treatments (null, tilled, tilled with compost) were applied lawn area (60% landscape) after installation completed, approximately half lots topdressed. Overall, drainage areas compost-amended soils produced 2.5% less than soils, but did not produce null soils. However, considering variability across storm events, amending resulted lower event depths compared treatments, effective curve numbers 77, 88, 82, respectively. Neither total nitrogen (TN) nor phosphorus (TP) concentrations or loadings significantly different based treatment topdressing. Annualized TN loading rates highest for (5.14 kg N/ha/year) lowest composted (4.21 N/ha/year). Tilled greatest annualized (1.18 P/ha/year), producing (0.73 P/ha/year). Results indicate prior decreased without increasing concentrations.

Storm-Water Bioretention for Runoff Quality and Quantity Mitigation
In response to water quality and quantity issues within the Stroubles Creek watershed in Blacksburg, Virginia, a retrofit bioretention cell (BRC) was installed to collect and treat runoff from an existing parking lot. The BRC was completed in July 2007, and 28 precipitation events were monitored between October 2007 and June 2008. For each storm, inflow and outflow flow-weighted composite sampl...
متن کاملManaging urban runoff in residential neighborhoods: Nitrogen and phosphorus in lawn irrigation driven runoff
Sources and mechanisms of nutrient transport in lawn irrigation driven surface runoff are largely unknown. We investigated the transport of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in lawn irrigation driven surface runoff from a residential neighborhood (28 ha) of 56% impervious and 44% pervious areas. Pervious areas encompassing turfgrass (lawns) in the neighborhood were irrigated with the reclaimed wa...
متن کاملMethane uptake in urban forests and lawns.
The largest natural biological sink for the radiatively active trace gas methane (CH4) is bacteria in soils that consume CH4 as an energy and carbon source. This sink has been shown to be sensitive to nitrogen (N) inputs and alterations of soil physical conditions. Given this sensitivity, conversion of native ecosystems to urban, suburban, and exurban managed lawns thus has potential to affect ...
متن کاملNitrogen retention in urban lawns and forests.
Lawns are a dominant cover type in urban ecosystems, and there is concern about their impacts on water quality. However, recent watershed-level studies suggest that these pervious areas might be net sinks, rather than sources, for nitrogen (N) in the urban environment. A 15N pulse-labeling experiment was performed on lawn and forest plots in the Baltimore (Maryland, U.S.A.) metropolitan area to...
